I think she’s like a female superhero on television, and we’re slowly exploring more and more of that. She’s got a tremendous amount of integrity. I’ve gotten to do more stunts lately, which is really cool. They’re letting us show more of her sexier side. She’s complex, and she’s also flawed. She’s not a perfect character, so there’s a lot to play in that.
I’m sorry. Did I step on your button?

Oh, so many layers to the Beckett onion, how ever will you peel them all.
I think it’d be rather exciting to meet a pirate.
#pirates of the caribbean was kind of a formative influence#and nothing about these movies so much as her—snarling selfish sea-hungry pirate king#sometimes I rewatch the first movie and laugh to myself about how little it understood her and will; how it tried to convince us#that will was the pirate because he was chasing after her; and pirates are obsessed with treasure#when elizabeth spends the first movie chasing freedom and the next two chasing him; chasing her freedom; chasing war; chasing the world#her wedding was interrupted and she held the man responsible at gunpoint until he gave her letters of pardon#she was mistaken for a sea goddess and accepted it without question; she led an army to war as though it were her due#and she did it all without ever apologizing for the lives she takes or the lies she tells and when she betrays sparrow with a kiss#he hisses ”pirate” because what else could she beI think Elizabeth Swan (Turner) is arguably one of the best female film characters of the last twenty years or so. She’s up there with Riley from the Alien franchise for me.
The only alternative ending I’ll accept is if Robin shows up at Barney’s front step and says, “I know we didn’t work out the first time and I know it doesn’t make any sense, but I can’t shake the feeling that we belong together. Is there any part of you that wants to try again?”
I think all of these characters have dark pasts. A lot of us are superheroes that didn’t choose to be. My character is a mercenary to begin with and was sort of put into the Widow program. She’s had a dark past, and she’s just beginning to discover how her past affects her when we see her in “Cap 2.” I think she’s had to dehumanize in a way, obviously, as anyone in that position does just to be able to accomplish the things that she’s had to. But now she’s like, “Wow, I actually have nightmares about this stuff.” She’s starting to realize, Wow, I’m a product of what I’ve done in some way. And I think, in “Avengers 2,” it’s about time that our past comes back to haunt us in some way –- all of us, I think, in one way or another.
